A trombone-led jazz quartet offers a refreshing sound. While often seen as secondary to saxophones or trumpets, the trombone can lead an ensemble in interesting ways. Pittsburgh's Reggie Watkins follows a path paved by J.J. Johnson (The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 1 & 2) and Curtis Fuller (Blues-ette), and more recently, Steve Turre (Rhythm Within).
On Rivers, his fourth album as leader, Watkins explores the trombone-led quartet, the title referencing Pittsburgh's three rivers. His post-bop quartet features pianist Michael Bernabe, bassist Eli Naragon, and drummer Jason Washington, Jr. Watkins' mellow trombone fills the sonic space with its low, round tone. Even in the chaotic introduction of "Blues In 3D," this quality prevails, eventually resolving into clear 12-bar sections.
"Dawn Of Peace" unfolds from a simple piano melody, with Watkins' muted, lengthy solo taking an introspective and winding path. "Blue 6" echoes Sonny Rollins' "Blue 7," and the closing "Shanghai Strut" stands apart, contributing to the album's overall mellow ambiance.
