No longer the 23-year-old prodigy who debuted with Perception (Self-Produced, 2017), vocalist and arranger Kristina Koller has evolved into a bold interpreter of both the Great American Songbook and the New American Songbook. Her tribute to Cole Porter, Get Out Of Town (Self-Produced, 2022), showcases her fearless approach to classic material. In between, she released Stronger (Self-Produced, 2019), an innovative blend of art rock, jazz, and indie-pop featuring original compositions.
Her latest album, Walk On By, is an homage to Burt Bacharach, the iconic composer of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. This mature work reimagines the songs that defined a generation, giving them a contemporary twist. Koller's longtime rhythm section—pianist Fima Chupakhin, bassist James Robbins, and drummer Cory Cox—provides a precise and understated accompaniment, allowing Koller's arrangements to shine. Koller gives the songs, originally recorded by artists like Dionne Warwick, The Carpenters, and Rod Stewart, a jaunty, modern makeover, highlighting their timeless appeal.
For older listeners, these performances evoke pure, indulgent nostalgia, while also introducing these classic love songs to new audiences. Koller's delicate and brilliant treatment of these musical gems prepares them for modern ears, proving that "What the world needs now..." are indeed timeless lyrics.
