Las Vegas-based singer Jonathan Karrant is soon to follow up 2023’s Eclectic (Virtuoso Music) with Live in Concert—Jonathan Karrant with The Joe Alterman Trio, due for release in September. Ahead of that, Karrant releases the single, “Your Song,” a curiously sensual treatment of the Elton John’s breakthrough single originally released on Elton John (Uni, 1970). This is literally a “jazzed-up version” of this song, but all in good ways.
Arranged by pianist Joe Alterman, this “Your Song” contains a bit of churchy gospel funk, more in keeping with John’s “Burn Down The Mission” or “My Father’s Gun.” But, those comparisons end there. Alterman and his rhythm section of bassist Mike Gurrola and drummer Kevin Kanner paint an elegant backdrop behind Karrant’s smooth, urbane singing that is anything but John-Taupin agrarian. Karrant’s toned and disciplined voice takes the familiar ballad and shines the sepia off, revealing a lustrous, hip, and sensual delivery.
Karrant’s treatment is pure, sexy fun. That he's captured before an appreciative live crowd is just ambrosia.
Thank you for your kind words.
I've always been impressed with Jonathan's musical focus and stage presence. He surrounds himself with the best and knows his craft. Another beautifully written piece, Michael.
