Song stylist Jonathan Karrant is making a preemptive strike on Mother’s Day with his single, “My Mother’s Eyes.” It was composed by Abel Baer and L. Wolfe Gilbert for the 1929 film Lucky Boy (Tiffany Pictures). Lucky Boy is notable for being an early amalgam of a part silent and part talking film starring George Jessel in his earliest surviving movie appearance. Karrant reanimates this ancient chestnut as a bluesy tribute to moms everywhere.
Karrant has recently enjoyed success with Eclectic (Virtuoso Music, 2023) and Christmas Wish (Virtuoso Music, 2022) and is presently touring, presenting the Tony Bennett Songbook. He continues to build on this base with this single. Backed by the standard jazz piano trio: pianist Patrick Hogan, bassist David Ostrem, and drummer Boris Shapiro, Karrant delivers a torchy take of the song, propelled by the churchy piano of Hogan. The singer continues to explore all of the side streets of his considerable talent, delivering a bravura coda to this perfect Mother’s Day offering.
